My Life Would Be VERY Different If That Were True

December 20, 2021

Robert A. Heinlein went on record that he felt the phrase, “All’s fair in love and war” was a “contemptable lie.” Along those same lines, I also put into the “contemptable lie” category the phrase, “If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.”

May This Be A Favorable Omen For Things To Come

December 17, 2021

Today in honor of winter break and the upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, we did a little launch of our own using a vinegar and baking soda powered rocket. Conditions were favorable, and the rocket was kind enough to give me just enough time to remove my hand before launching. (Thereby demonstrating the importance of our pre-launch safety preparations in the process.)

Three Times If It’s “Just” Blackmail

December 16, 2021

Look, I know I have a cynical streak big enough to function as an aircraft carrier in a pinch, and I really, really want to believe all the heartwarming holiday sentiment I see this time of year is genuine, but even so, there are times I feel perfectly justified in my first thought being, “That’s nice. Now blink once if they’ve got a gun on you, and twice if they’re holding another hostage . . .”

The Funny Thing Was They Were Actually Different Movies

Them: Did you just quote my favorite movie?

Me: No, I just quoted my favorite movie!

That’s . . . Actually A Really Good Suggestion

The other day I half-rhetorically asked L’s Mother, “How do I get across to an engineer that I agree with them, I just think they’re being excessive in this case?”

“Tell them,” L’s Mother replied, “their direction is fine, their magnitude is not.”

“Yes”

Recently I did the “Oh, by the way, these are my sites” thing to someone after they had known me long enough to express frustration about how difficult I am to get to know, and since I specifically started this blog so people could get to know me better, it seemed like a logical thing to do.

Also logically, after reading some of it, today she asked me (and I’m blatantly paraphrasing for comedic effect here), “Am I crazy, or are some of those entries inspired by me?”

Well It Is!

December 10, 2021

Sometimes I feel like the unspoken exchange between me and someone I haven’t connected with in a while goes like:

Them: You haven’t changed, I see.

Me: I really have, and I hope mostly for the better.

Them: You just made a joke that pushed the envelope.

Me: Well, yeah, I still do that, but I’m more discerning about it these days, and the moment I realize I’ve misjudged my audience, I stop. That’s better!

Because Of Course I Did

December 9, 2021

Today, for reasons I don’t even pretend to understand, L’s Mother had a pair of socks in her back pocket this morning. The logical thing to do would have been to ask her why.

I went for the socksy joke.

Just because you understand trajectories doesn’t mean you’re good at pool.

My Feelings Today

December 7, 2021

It’s taken me a long time to find the way I want to phrase this because I don’t want anyone to think I’m suggesting “conceal, don’t feel,” but there’s a difference between being open about your feelings and taking those feelings out on others.
