A Quick Candle For My Son

I want to commend you, son, for realizing that much of what people argue about today are indeed “social constructs.” (I’m presuming your mother introduced you to that concept because that’s not a turn of phrase I use.) Once you think about, you start to realize that it’s frankly impossible for every place that claims, for instance, to make “the world’s best pizza” to actually make the world’s best pizza no matter how passionately their fans argue the point.

Once you realize that, you can appreciate the different styles of pizza and pick your own favorite.

It Certainly Doesn’t Describe All Of Them

As my son and I wrapped up our course on history for the year, we found ourselves talking about the traits common to successful civilizations. Unity was a big one, of course, but flexibility/adaptability was right up there, plus a certain willingness to look at the world beyond their borders.

Do those sounds like words that describe our current civilizations to you?

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that there seems to be an increasing number of people willing to go out of their way to give a kind word and a glass of water to people who are drowning?  Is this a spontaneous development, or is someone out there teaching a course in this kind of thing?
