So I Guess I DID Know What I Was Going To Write About Today

November 25, 2022

I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t at least vaguely have this thought when I posted this yesterday, but it was quickly pointed out to me that in some circles just saying, “Happy Thanksgiving” could be considered negative.

It’s not that I don’t get that, I do, but I think it’s important to acknowledge the intention behind what someone says.

I’ve NO Idea What I’m Going To Post Tomorrow Though

November 24, 2022

In honor of Thanksgiving, L’s Mother asked me to go seventy-two hours without sharing anything even remotely negative no matter how interesting or funny, so . . .

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving

This year I’m particularly thankful that nobody tried to make me flood my social media with of a list of things for which I am thankful.

It’s Actually Kind Of Strange

November 28, 2019

This started as a potential throwaway joke in honor of the day, but the more I thought about it, the more I couldn’t escape the thought:

Why is it the things I’m most thankful for in life are also the things I’m least encouraged to talk about socially?

For Some It’s Just “Horrible Mistake Day”

November 28, 2016

Over the weekend I asked someone if they’d had a good Thanksgiving, and they answered me with a tell-tale eye drop even before they answered me in words.  Very hesitantly they told me that Thanksgiving isn’t really a holiday they celebrate, and they tried to elaborate why in general terms without getting into specifics that they obviously were afraid would offend me.

They needn’t have bothered, of course, but since they don’t know me that well, they didn’t know that.

“I understand,” I told them.  “While I personally prefer to focus on the ‘coming together to celebrate thankfulness’ aspect of the day, I’m perfectly aware that for some people Thanksgiving can have entirely different connotations.”

Happy Thanksgiving 2013

November 28, 2013

Truth be told, Thanksgiving sort of snuck up on me this year, and while I do have a lot to be thankful for, I’ve just never liked the idea of reciting the list (a legacy of the days when teachers used to expect me to do this), which leaves me in a bit of a quandary since the “list of thankfulness” is the obvious way to go when you’re at a loss about what to write about Thanksgiving.

Maybe a little too obvious though, so I’m going to compromise by going with an abbreviated list of what I am most thankful for at this exact moment:

I’m thankful for a family patient enough to understand my perpetual need to “write something down real quick,” and I’m thankful that I no longer always have to let that need consume me, particularly when I’m having difficulty finding precisely what I want to say.

And with that said, I’m off to spend time with said family.

Happy Thanksgiving.

So . . . SO Thankful

November 22, 2012

It’s Thanksgiving around here, and lots and lots of people in this country are going to a great deal of trouble to celebrate today.  In light of that, I find it ironic that what I am most thankful for at this moment is that nobody in this house is going to any trouble to do much of anything today.

Enjoy the day in whatever manner you enjoy most, folks.
