Speaking of bad signs . . .

“Like what happened when we were on that date,” L’s Mother said yesterday in reference to something that happened months ago.

We both realized at the same time that it was not a good thing that even without further clarification, I knew exactly what she meant.

I once read that after Lou Gehrig had been diagnosed with the disease now associated with his name, but before it prompted his retirement from baseball, Lou was in a game and had completed a very basic play, a simple catch and toss, as I recall.  He didn’t think anything of it until one of this teammates told him something like, “Good job, Lou.”

While Lou knew this was kindly meant, he also realized what a bad sign it was that his teammate was complimenting him for doing the baseball equivalent of walking across the street or tying your own shoes, something that when all is well, really shouldn’t be noticed as significant at all, much less be compliment worthy.

Why do I mention this, you ask?

Money can be a powerful aphrodisiac, but consideration works better on the worthwhile ones.  Money as an aphrodisiac still has its uses, of course. In small doses it’s a spice; in large doses it’s a warning sign.
